This morning, Marilynn Burke led a group of enthusiastic birders through two sites in upper Crystal Springs Creek. Twenty-some members of Portland Audubon’s “Magpies” contingent (“start a little later, go a little slower, try to keep a restroom in sight”) enjoyed a gorgeous day with gorgeous fall colors at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden and Reed College Canyon.

It wasn’t an especially “birdy” day, but there were moments. The bird of the walk was a Merlin, perched overlooking Crystal Springs Lake. And no matter what they say, a day with a Hooded Merganser in it is never a total loss.
Zac also solicited feedback from birders visiting the Canyon. He hopes to augment the existing bird list on the Canyon website (view at http://www.reed.edu/canyon/natu/animals/index.html#birds ), and would welcome posts from regular (and irregular) visitors birding the site. His email address is listed on the Canyon website.
