Portland’s winter birding scene has been enlivened by an influx of Mountain Chickadees, giving many Crystal Springs residents—and other Portlanders—the rare opportunity to see all three of Oregon’s chickadees (including Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees) in their back yards. Mountain Chickadees, distinguished by a sporty eye stripe and a very hoarse call, normally hang out at higher elevations in the Cascades, and while they do make the odd appearance in Portland, to have so many around at once is a very unusual treat.
