The Crystal Springs Partnership hosted a water color workshop, Painting Nature with Watercolor and Pen on Saturday July 25th in the beautiful setting of Reed Canyon on the Reed College Campus. This was an all- day class focused on the use of watercolor painting and pen drawing to record observations of the natural environment.
The workshop was led by local resident and environmental scientist Heather Brunelle.
We had eight participants with a variety of experience related to drawing and painting with water colors.

On one of the two rainy days in July we schedule outdoor painting! At the amphitheater in Reed Canyon.
The first part of the course focused on composition and painting techniques followed by applying these techniques to produce paintings that reflected the natural landscape of the canyon.
There were significant challenges related to the rainy weather but we were able to huddle under a cedar tree tucked into a corner of the amphitheater where it stayed relatively dry for the duration of the workshop.
Heather did a wonderful job connecting with the students and the I believe students felt that they had learned some of the skills required for recording nature in a field journal format.
This was a great opportunity for the partnership to connect with the greater community and folks seemed to enjoy both the learning and social aspects of the class.
The partnership would like to thank Heather for her time preparing and presenting the water color workshop. In the future we hope to expand our community outreach by offering more classes focused on using the arts to help folks connect to the Crystal Springs watershed.
